La Loi est un essai de l'économiste et homme politique français Frédéric Bastiat, écrit en juin 1850 à Mugron, quelques mois avant sa mort à Rome.

Dans ce pamphlet, il répond à cette question : « Qu'est-ce que la loi ? que doit-elle être ? quel est son domaine ? quelles sont ses limites ? où s'arrêtent, par suite, les attributions du Législateur ? »

Il définit la loi comme « la force commune organisée pour faire obstacle à l'Injustice », « l'organisation collective du Droit individuel de légitime défense ». Il en conclut que « la Loi, c'est la Justice », la « Justice organisée ».

Frédéric Bastiat, marque la France du milieu du 19e siècle en prenant part aux débats économiques : il collabore régulièrement au Journal des Économistes et entretient une polémique virulente avec Proudhon. Il participe à la vie politique française et est élu à l'Assemblée, où il votera tantôt avec la gauche, tantôt avec la droite. Il développa une pensée libérale, caractérisée par la défense du libre-échange ou de la concurrence et l'opposition au socialisme et au colonialisme.

Relativement tombé dans l'oubli en France, il bénéficie d'une renommée internationale, en particulier grâce à ses Harmonies économiques. Il est considéré comme un précurseur de l'école autrichienne d'économie et de l'école des choix publics.

This handsome new edition of Peter Linebaugh's classic The London Hanged is a fully updated version of a seminal and groundbreaking study of the rise of consumer society, which the author contends arose via the crushing and criminalising of the English working class.

With The London Hanged, Linebaugh, a student of the great EP Thomson (whose Making of the English Working Class still occupies a pinnacle of historiography and which should certainly be consulted in parallel with this work), takes his place alongside his teacher, and writers like Christopher Hill (The World Turned Upside Down, Intellectual Origins of the English Revolution, as a historian of considerable stature.

He argues that hanging in 18th-century London was not about punishment--hanging was a public spectacle used to demonstrate the power of a ruling class and to force the acceptance by the poor populace of that power and its use in criminalising, forbidding and removing traditional rights and freedoms. Capital punishment was about disciplining all the poor. Hanging was part of the ideological process of turning London's downtrodden masses into a suppliant industrial working class.

In this new edition Linebaugh reinforces the arguments he previously made and responds vigorously to a number of his critics.
